Top Ten Tips for September 2002...(Go back to Current Month)

Intro to the Top Ten Tips...

Each month, Tim posts his 'Top Ten Tips' for HR practitioners on various subjects. This month's subject is 'Developing HR staff for the medium term...how to build the right HR skills for HR's clients for the balance of this decade'. A list of subjects for forthcoming months and links to previous subjects can be found at the bottom of this page.

  1. Spend time with the HR Committee of the Board and Senior Management understanding where their HR interests and expectations are for the next few years;
  2. Construct the corporate HR agenda - by individual HR discipline - flexibly and directly relative to the company's projected needs;
  3. Obtain 'buy-in' for the overall direction which should tend generally towards a less-administrative, and more 'partnership/consultative' orientation;
  4. Establish realistic competencies for the HR staff and measure each HR member vigilantly against them. Use your peers' independent judgement to validate your observations;
  5. Deal with those members who are unlikely to respond to the criteria and measurement demanded of HR;
  6. Rotate members through the 'soft' and more scientific disciplines within HR. Give members the opportunity to learn the Balance Sheet and P & L implications of managing Compensation, Benefits and Pension portfolios on the company;
  7. HR 'generalists' are much more effective and credible if they have managed the sciences in HR, as well as the softer 'arts', such as interviewing, 'OD' and employee relations;
  8. Benchmark your progress internally and externally and act regularly;
  9. Demand and reward excellence across the HR member fraternity;
  10. Stay alert for change and its implications for HR. A good plan is often 'tuned' to stay current.
