Top Ten Tips for November 2000...(Go back to Current Month)
Intro to the Top Ten Tips...
Each month, Tim posts his 'Top Ten Tips' for HR practitioners on various subjects. This month's subject is 'Ethical Practices in Performance Administration & related Salary Administration'. A list of subjects for forthcoming months and links to previous subjects can be found at the bottom of this page.
- Treat your colleagues in the same professional manner as you would wish to be treated;
- Together, set out the shared objectives for the year/period under review ahead of time;
- Don't assume that your subordinates or peers understand what it is you want to achieve...clarify the desired end results until everyone involved is 'on board';
- Set the goal posts realistically and identify certain 'milestone' achievements that will reflect required progress; make them public for all to see;
- Divide the tasks and responsibilities of those involved clearly...it's well worth the time investment now, not later; review them regularly;
- To the most reasonable extent possible, outline the anticipated consequences of goal achievement to those involved. A clearer idea of how the success of a particular goal or venture affects the business or the end-customer, spurs initiative and creativity in employees;
- Identify reasonable measurements and criteria up-front that will reflect success, near-success or failure. Amend them together, as circumstances require;
- Link performance with reward in HR programs. Whilst the actual timings may differ, employees should be able to relate the impact of one with the other;
- Consider 'rewards' other than just salary that may be more tax-effective and personalized than money e.g. time-in-lieu; flexible hours; work-from-home arrangements; higher-profile assignments;
- Be fair vs equitable. Don't pay for mediocrity, but do pay an affordable 'premium' for excellence.
