360° Feedback - is it right for you?
If you can answer 'yes' realistically and thoughtfully to the following, then a multi-rater or a '360-type' feedback model is probably right for you to consider as an HR investment.

  • Is 'top management' committed to changing the current one-to-one, boss/subordinate appraisal mechanism?
  • Does a systematic, planned migration to 360 'fit' with the HR Business Plan?
  • Are there other HR programs (e.g. sales-related incentive rewards; succession/development planning ) dependent upon accurate 'people data'?
  • Has the organization documented and communicated a core set of skills, knowledge and attributes that are the template for conducting business with customers and among fellow workers?
  • Do we have solid data that tells us the present system is faulty and that our employees are receptive to an alternative?
  • Have we access to automated administrative systems to distribute, collect and analyse performance feedback?
  • Are we prepared to invest in training the organization, top to bottom, to understand and embrace the benefits of '360'?
  • Have we agreed upon standards of performance for everyone that are measureable and auditable?
  • Are we prepared to keep trying if we stumble and don't get it right the first time?
  • If the other nine aren't 100% in place, are we close enough to risk implementation?
