Top Ten Tips for June 2001...Go back to Current Month

Intro to the Top Ten Tips...

Last month, Tim posted his summary version of the 'paradigm' shift in business and how it should affect HR. Regardless of the new 'lingo', here is Part Two of 'Browsers' Choices'... some tips on how to migrate successfully from 'A' to 'B' in a prudent, yet urgent, manner.

  • Take the necessary time to fully understand where the company's Business Plan is headed and why;
  • Ensure HR is afforded the opportunity to provide the necessary input to that Plan;
  • Check HR's planning assumptions with business unit heads who are HR's clients;
  • Agree the schedule of deliverables where HR is a key player. Identify the areas of business risk and recommend alternatives where practical;
  • Look for a client 'sponsor' or 'champion' to help move the project forward and provide a form of oversight to the HR endeavour. It shows the necessary partnership and urgency to achieving objectives;
  • Audit your own HR resources. Can HR deliver the goods - on time? Do we have the right bench strength of human talent; information technology; experience; attitude; and disciplined processes?
  • Accept no deviation from the change/transition plan. Too many plans falter because of the lack of speed and determination to see it through to completion;
  • Be sure to have a detailed communications plan with full involvement of business unit heads;
  • Communicate regularly; punctually; factually; simply. If a deadline has to be missed, say so... upfront;
  • Inspect progress regularly; seek out input from those at the revenue/client level who influence business results - not just the folks in the 'ivory tower'.
