Top Ten Tips for August 2002...(Go back to Current Month)

Intro to the Top Ten Tips...

Each month, Tim posts his 'Top Ten Tips' for HR practitioners on various subjects. This month's subject is 'How to make an external 'Coach' a positive work experience'. A list of subjects for forthcoming months and links to previous subjects can be found at the bottom of this page.

  1. As the employer, be sure that you engage a 'coach' for well considered reasons. The 'coach' should discuss with you what other alternatives you considered and your reasons for concluding that 'coaching' was one desirable avenue;
  2. Have a clear, agreed objective that all parties (employee -'coach'- employer) share;
  3. Agree on potential consequences for the employee/employer should the coaching go/not go well, particularly if the 'coaching' exercise is part of a well-documented remedial performance program. Be sure that all parties are informed and that reasonable timelines, measurements and outcomes are agreed in advance;
  4. Allow the 'coach' some freedom to act;
  5. Solicit feedback regularly against agreed milestones;
  6. Don't expect results overnight. The employee has to take some time to become comfortable with the whole idea of 'coaching' and the 'coach' personally;
  7. If the employee agrees, solicit peer referees who can provide factual background and progress evaluation to the 'coach';
  8. Help plan the schedule of 'coaching' events. These can be extracurricular as well as intramural;
  9. If the employee agrees, publicize the 'coaching' exercise in a positive vein. 'Coaching' is not only remedial...it is also proactive and applicable in many circumstances;
  10. Celebrate the success; learn from 'near-misses' or failures. Check out the 'coach', too, for prior experience and work references.
